The Abacos Sailing, Boating & Fishing Paradise
The Abacos are a sailing and boating pleasure ground. It is located in the Northern Bahamas. 120 miles of amazing islands and cays make up this group, which consists of: the Great Abaco, the Little Abaco, Stranger's Cay, Wood Cay, Green Turtle Cay, Umbrella Cay, Great Guana Cay, Gorda Cay, Walker's Cay, Elbow Cay, Man-O-War Cay, and Mores Island. Great Abaco is the third largest island in the Abacos. The main island of Great Abaco is protected by a string of cays several miles offshore, which provides wonderful sailing and boating in the Sea of Abaco. It is known in the world as
a "Sailors' Paradise" and if this is in your blood don't pass up the opportunity to experience it. The cultural history of The Abacos is similar to the rest of the Bahamas as the Abaconians; a light-haired, light-eyed group of European ancestral peoples; are direct descendants from the refugees who fled the newly independent United States in 1783. The natives utilize boat building, family run hotels, farming, fishing and guesthouses as their economic means within this group of islands. Abaco National Park is 20,000 acres in Southern Abaco that is home to the Abaco parrot. The park offers views that will provide lifetime memories and offer the serenity that seems to have escaped most vacatio n destinations. Elbow Cay offers breath taking hill top views and beaches. It also has the famous, and must see, Hope Town Lighthouse. Man-O-War Cay is named after the Man-O-War bird. Its' inhabitants rely heavily on shipbuilding for their livelihood and the town resembles that of the
United States' New England villages with just an added touch of tropical vegetation. It is a delight to see and visit. Walker's Cay is the northern most island in the Bahamas and is a fisherman's dream come true. It is excellent for game fish and is a must if you want to try your skills in a tropical paradise of unimaginable proportions. Treasure Cay is the whole family's perfect spot for activities such as romantic beaches, tennis courts, an outstanding marina, scuba diving and golf at the Abacos' only public Golf Course, Treasure Cay Golf Club.
